Hi, I'm writing this post because I've a problem which appeared on Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS and still happen on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, both 32 bit and 64 bit. Indeed, after some time (without any criterion) my PC freezes completely, and this makes impossible to use the mouse and to open the shell, so I always have to shut down it with the power button. This thing happens independently on what I'm doing with my PC, but it happens more frequently when I'm watching Youtube videos. When I switch on my PC, it doesn't report any error, neither in the log.
If this can be helpful, my PC is an Acer ES1-512-P2C7.
I hope you will help me.

Hi,
I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 in one of my machines. While using wifi, in every five minutes or so, Inteet discoects even-though the wifi coected. I need to discoect wifi and then coect the same to coect inteet. Sometimes I need to restart network-manager service and also rarely I need to restart system to coect inteet. No such problem in any other devices. Inteet available uninterrupted if I coected the system to same network through eitheet cable. Please advise.

I have an old Intel Celeron M380 1.6ghz single core laptop with ddr2 2gb of ram. I am just wondering how well Ubuntu will run on a single core.

It says it needs a dual core.the laptop came with windows xp but the code has wo off and I had to put a new drive in it.

So instead of paying for a new copy of Windows, I want to put Ubuntu on it.

I just want to know if it will run properly.

I am so sorry to say. once every six weeks an over the air update is not enough. tablet isnot close to doing what is has been sold for. I have been checking daily for patches or improvements. I am very disapointed there is no real support or communication in what is comming and what to expect. I know i supplied my emailadress when i ordered this tablet. For some this device is not that expensive, for meit was, i sold my ipad because I am a big fan of Ubuntu andderivates.

I was relay delighted when this tablet was aounced. I expected to give real usable feedback instead of complaints about this tablet not working. I don't like tocomplain. but here are some real problems I experience. battery is ruing empty very fast. not using this device all apps closed results in empty battery after 18 hours. on screen keyboard is not always availleble not only with firefox but also @ lgoon when password needs to be supplied to access device. that is why I have bought bluetooth keyboard, which I intended to buy at a later moment. only power of device made keyboard availleble. power supply included with the tablet isn't supllying enough energy to charge tablet, using my Samsung supply instead no problems.

I am really missing assistive tools, videochat is on of them. voice to text en text to voice. device loses cache. writing this post looking back made all disappear. only thing working is sending and receiving email. Someone adressing disapointment of users would be helpful. people payed for this device expecting it to be at least beta and quickly improving with provided feedback. Instead when someone is mentioning flahing to android, it is said to wait for update. without any arguments in what to expect in near future. and how to apply workarrounds for now.

I know I will reflash, there is no alteative and no empathic support adressing the disapointment and no real possible solutions and workarrounds are being provided.I am sorry to make this last post, Sorry because I believe in what Ubuntu stands for. but selling equipment for regular price, gives a responsibility to adress the problems occurring and comminucate about actions taken to compensate or fix the not matching the promisses when selling this device. sorry for my bad English not able to check some words because I loose my text.

Hi all,

I'd hoped to paste a copy of my explanation of my problem right here, but it's not accessible, so please allow me to post this as a simple test of whether or not the forum will accept this new thread.

Some 13-14 hours ago, the forum would give me strange messages when I clicked Preview or Submit Post.

I don't know what will happen as I click them now!

OH! Preview worked! ...that's a good sign!

(I have screenshots of the previous nightmare.)

Hey fellas, new guy here.

Im a writer, and wanted to pick up a super light weight laptop for writing. I was thinking to myself "Something like a typewriter but 2016". I saw this and felt it was so ****** I could really only do one task at a time. Typing.

With the specs on the Acer Cloudbook 14 with 32gb of SSD, could this run the latest Ubuntu OS better than windows 10.

I referred to this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...emRequirements

and by that it seems all is a go. But I just want to make sure.

Thanks again, any tips are welcome. This is my first OS change, ive only ever used windows. ever.

What pvr could I use (for a dvb-t usb stick) with Lubuntu 15.10 currently or I could install 16.04 if necessary.

I tried tvheadend but it won't work, apparently it's hard to get it to work in 15.10 or 16.04.

Is there any one I can just install without having to go through lots of complex workarounds that I can't get to work? Can anyone recommend one that they confirm works with dvb-t sticks?
I'm a newb.

Or should I buy a stand alone pvr?

Hi all

Have installed Ubuntu server 16.04 on a test server and would like to allocate a LAN ip address on startup through /etc/network/interfaces.

Current code is

Code:

# The primary network interface
auto enp17s0
iface enp17s0 inet dchp
On Ubuntu server 14.04 the code was changed to either

Code:

# The primary network interface
auto p3p1
iface p3p1 inet static
address 192.168.0.49
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.1
dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
or

Code:

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.49
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.1
dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
depending on the interface.

What should it be now, please?

TIA

Well - you posted in the Ubuntu Phone and Tablet sub-forum which is where you'll find support requests for the Ubuntu Phone. But since the tagline section for that sub-forum says:

Support for Ubuntu smartphones, tablets, and any mobile devices ruing Ubuntu.
And since this is not a support request, I've moved this to Ubuntu, Linux and OS Chat, one of the discussion sections. I could have moved this to Forum Feedback & Help, but you are more likely to get feedback about Ubuntu phones and tablets here.

As far as finding out how satisfied people are with the Ubuntu phone, a forum is not really the place to gauge satisfaction for anything accurately. Most threads here are about problems, so the forum as a whole gives a skewed impression as to how reliable Ubuntu and Ubuntu devices are. Users tend not to ask for help when everything is working to their satisfaction! And human nature being what it is, you are more likely to encounter moans and whinges than glowing testimonials in the discussion areas.

Another place you might want to keep an eye on is the Mobile Technology Discussions sub-forum. Threads about Ubuntu devices are in a minority there, but I do see a recent "we love the Ubuntu Tablet" thread, which slightly counters what I say about moans, whinges and glowing testimonials!

For what it is worth, I am very satisfied with my Aquaris Ubuntu phone, mainly because I did not have unrealistic expectations of a phone OS where the range and choice of apps is more limited than with Android or iOS. I certainly find Ubuntu on a phone far less irritating than Android.

I'm hoping someone can explain some things to me about the way the distro-makers operate. I'm a bit confused as to why they do things the way they do. So as we all know, Micro$oft practices rolling release. They release a particular OS, then they just release service packs and updates for it for 7 years. Well now I think they've said they're going to lower that to 5 or something, but you get the idea. For a good long time, you're going to see just the same OS, with any major changes needed, being done in the form of downloadable updates.

Now I know that some distros do this, but most don't. IIRC Arch and Manjaro do rolling release. This appeals to me, because as a very new linux convert, it just fits in with what I'm used to. So why doesn't Ubuntu, or Mint, or all the other distros, do this as well? I mean I know that like Microsoft, yeah they'd eventually need to just release a full new OS. Or would they? If linux is so modular, and can just be gutted and rebuilt on the same install, why don't they just do "service packs" or something like M$ does? What is the point in releasing a new version of the OS every 2 or 3 years? Why not just wait a lot longer, and just do updates?

The way it was explained to me, even major changes to the OS could actually be done without having to reinstall it or wipe the drive or anything like that. Why do some distros do rolling release, and not the way Ubuntu does it?

Also, another related question. When the next big Ubuntu comes out that you want to install, and you go to install it, will it be like going from XP to Windows 7? Do you have to pretty much wipe the old OS off, and install the new one? Or is it just like some kind of major upgrade, and you don't have to move everything you want to keep, off of that hard drive in order to do the install? I just find it all a bit confusing.

I am attempting a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 along side Windows 10 and Windows 7 installations, on 2 hard disks under a RAID1 (FakeRAID) configuration. I tried to do some up-front research, because last time I tried this, I broke my FakeRAID configuration, having to rebuild my array. So, I found the following resource, using Ubuntu 14.04:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/45551...ror-question-m

Articles I read seemed to confirm mdadm was recommended over dmraid. So, I proceeded to deactivate dmraid and installed mdadm per instructions, selecting /dev/md126p6 as my bootloader device* after creating my partitions manually. After starting the install getting past the current appstreamcli issue (killing the process), I get the "Bootloader install failed". Per the instructions at the link above, I expected this to occur, and plaed to revisit this later with the repair utility. However, the "Bootloader install failed" screen refuses to let me press "OK" - it is not grayed out. The window just seems frozen.

I have found several bug reports on this, dating back 5+ years, with a resolution marked "Invalid", but with a lack of seemingly good advice. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

I installed 16.04 on my desktop a few weeks ago. I broke it tweaking different desktops. Then I fixed it using the original installation USB drive.

This moing my computer would not boot from the HD so I again tried to repair it with the installation USB drive. However it seemed to freeze part way through the process.

After trying several times I then tried the nuclear option of another fresh install. Same result.

Each time I booted from the same USB drive.

So I thought that my installation USB must have become corrupted. I downloaded another ISO and a fresh USB stick. Same result, except that I opened the log screen and found that it seems to be taking a 6 minute pause after every few steps.

So far it has taken nearly two hours!

Is there anything that can be done?

Hi all, new here. I am very new to Linux and I recently installed an ubuntu based OS called Zorin OS9 core 64 bit.

So I tried to go ahead and use their little app center to install the driver for my Nvidia GTX 970. I am having major problems even booting the OS without it. Its damn near completely broken without the video driver, for some strange reason. Problem is, they don't really make it very easy to understand what the different Nvidia drivers actually are. I searched "nvidia" in the search bar of the Synaptic package manager, and a list of (packages?) showed up. But none of them are very clear on if they are a GTX 970 driver for Linux. It all reads more like is some kind of driver editor, or weird Nvidia server setup. None of it simply says "Latest Nvidia driver for Linux". Its very difficult for me to determine which one to actually install.

Can anyone point out exactly what I need to look for, word for word, in the synaptic package manager? Or in the software center? I'm not even sure what application to search in. Thanks!

Hello! I have a strange problem.
My laptop: Acer C720 chromebook
I installed johnlewis bios and original ubuntu 16.04 LTS (+ 14.04.4 LTS, and 14.10 (as I remember) nonLTS)
Everythinh is fine, but I have 1 strange big problem with touchpad.

When I put my laptop on a table or any other flat surface touchpad stops working.
If I keep my laptom on my laps or in my hand, everything works. If I put the laptop on the full back cover, touchpad stops working.
Touchpad is not responding. Sometimes, the cursor begins to move very poorly performing many clicks.

I have checked the hardware. This is no problem. I installed windows 10 (thx coolstar) and touchpad worked everywhere). Also, touchpad worked with original Chrome OS.

ONLY on Ubuntu touchpad doesn't work when I put my laptop.

I need ubuntu. I can make a video if it necessary. I can send every log, just ask me.

Please help me solve my problem! If I need to post this topic in another place, dear moderator, please, replace it!

So, I have an issue. Ubuntu 15.10 seems to not like anything relating to starting or stopping a session. Everything works fine and proper once booted/restarted/logged in, but the boot time is really obnoxious. When I was using Windows 7, for example, on the exact same hardware, I would boot in about 5-10, seconds, and maybe 5 for shutdown. You can see why this bothers me.

Hello guys. I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 with my ThinkPad T520. The default sensitivity of the trackpoint is terrible, but I found out that this command fixes it:

echo 220 | sudo tee /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/sensitivity

Now, how do I make that execute automatically each time I log in, ideally without having to type my password because of sudo?

Or is there a better way?

Thanks!

I finished making a slideshow movie for my son's school and export the project from openshot using the DVD profile. The ouput file I am getting is a .dvd file type, 38.7MB which seems small, and it seems like nothing knows what to do with it. Brasero couldn't open it, Devedo couldn't open it, Bombono couldn't open it, Mplayer couldn't play it, nothing. However if I export the same project to the YoutubeHD profile, I get a 2GB .mp4 which looks and works great. Problem is when I transcode the .mp4 to a dvd using bombono, the quality takes a big hit. Does anyone know how to properly make a playable dvd from a .dvd file? Or any other suggestions?

Problem is, they don't really make it very easy to understand what the different Nvidia drivers actually are. I searched "nvidia" in the search bar of the Synaptic package manager, and a list of (packages?) showed up. But none of them are very clear on if they are a GTX 970 driver for Linux. It all reads more like is some kind of driver editor, or weird Nvidia server setup. None of it simply says "Latest Nvidia driver for Linux". Its very difficult for me to determine which one to actually install.

Can anyone point out exactly what I need to look for, word for word, in the synaptic package manager? When looking for the correct driver for my GTX 970. Thanks!
